    Re: Explorer serp setups?

Keep in mind that the Van bracket is designed for kind of an oddball AC compressor. I tried to mount a York compressor to it, and it wouldn't have been that hard but I don't have the hood clearance for it. I simply couldn't get the York low enough on the bracket to allow the hood to close and have the York not interfering with other stuff under hood. You have two advantages though - a taller hood and a shorter motor.

I adapted a Sanden to mine and did the "grease mod" which seems to work pretty well. Just a little food for thought. The only thing I don't like about the van bracket is that it puts the PS pump pretty low and the bracket rides pretty close to the frame. I notched my bracket to allow for clearance. Again with a 302-based block it probably won't be an issue.

Good to know. I'll keep that in mind as I get ready to do this. I'd love to get a York under the hood.

        Re: Explorer serp setups?

        1) Who is running the Explorer serp setup with hydroboost? What are you doing for a dual return? Stock reservoir with a tee or aftermarket dual return res? I'm running 33s and will eventually go to 35s and no intentions of ram assist so I figured stock res w/ a tee fitting should work w/ the hydroboost return running through the straight part of the tee... Also, anyone running the smaller diameter p/s pump pulley from Driven Auto Parts? $65 for the pulley but I'll spend it somewhere else if its not needed for my setup...

        2) Driven also sells a pulley to run your stock 3 bolt 28oz harmonic. I was thinking of getting this as well and just re-marking it to use the explorer pointer. How much does it usually cost to re-balance the explorer harmonic? They want $75 for the 3 bolt billet crank pulley & weighing costs vs benefits here...

        3) Does the 4G alt wire in the same as the 3G? I've got the instructions from BC for the 3G and seems like they should be the same?...

        Thanks for the help,

I was just looking at RJM and they have harneses for 3g and 4g alternators. If they are as easy as my rjm headlight harness Im sold. take a look it may work for you.

            Re: Explorer serp setups?

I run hydroboost and hydro ram assist steering on mine with the stock explorer pump. I have used up 2 junkyard pumps already it seems. The excursion pump is the same body but with a transverse mounting boss. The folks at AGR think they can take their upgraded guts for the excursion pump and putthem in my explorer pump to up the output to 4gph +. I just have to get ups to stop losing the packages so they can give it a go.
For the return I melted my reservoir in the gasoline fire of 98 so I used a can off a astrovan and tapped and jb welded a 3/8 nipple for dual return. Simple and works well so far. I just screwed it to te mount where the old reservoir was.

4g harness was plug and play with the rim and explorer alt, simple and works great.

                Re: Explorer serp setups?

Just read in a magazine that the Explorer was the #1 vehicle turned in during the C4C mess.
Like was said then, what a waste of all of those nice GT40 (and GT40P) roller motors.

But at least that might give us some more serpentine and reasonably sized intake setups to scrounge.

Anybody ever experiment with a late-model Exploder's rear disc brakes? I don't remember anyone ever talking about it.

I've seen something somewhere about a guy who modded whatever he had to to get them on (wow, don't know if that could've been any more vague). Wasn't a big project though from what I remember. I thought it was on here somewhere... I've been thinking about grabbing a set and giving it a shot but really don't need the extra parts laying around before a 1200 mi move and my bucket already overfloweth with projects!

Here is the link to the build where he did the Explorer rear disc install.

If you want a second returnline fitting, you can go get a big rig tire valve (the metal kind) just drill the appropriate size hole in the ham can, push through and tighten the nut, too simple.
The valve minus the core will act as a nipple and 3/8's line should fit just right.
72' in pieces and piles of awesomeness

You're right... that is too simple! I guess that'd do'er...

PDX, based off that RJM harness looks like I can build my own off whats hangin' off the alt. I cut the wires long just for that reason. Looks like all I need to do is slap a weatherpak on the green wire and a ring connector on the battery lead and I'm good! What does the green wire run to? Keyed ignition source?

                            Thanks,

You are correct it would be easy just to do your own with the pigtail off the explorer harness. I ordered mine with the harness so it was just that easy for me at the time. Since it was plug and play I will have to take a peak to see where it goes, I just plugged the sucker in.
