    Re: Explorer serp setups?

So how much did they charge you for a complete set up? I might want one of these for my Bronco.

They run about $190 with everything. List of parts I grabbed: timing cover; harmonic balancer; water pump; thermostat housing (not sure if its needed but I got'em anyway); clutch fan; P/S pump w/ high press hose & reservoir, A/C pump & bracket; Alternator & bracket; all pulleys, tensioner & bolts.

I think they'd actually charge more if I didn't disguise some of the parts! I bolted the water pump & fan back up to the timing cover and called it a "water pump & fan"... Also did not get dinged for the P/S pump/ A/C pump BRACKET or the high press P/S hose (I've always had to pay seperate for Hi press hoses in the past cut or not!)... I know what gal to go to when I checkout down here. The other chick will itemize every single pulley, bracket, hose, etc, etc...

I didn't grab the clutch fan with mine (going to run a Taurus fan). I did grab the nice P/S cooler and the two foglights though to wire in as backup lights on my bumper...

Broncrick was nice enough to compensate me for my time, bandaids & hand cleaner to pull one for him for $275. I'm heading up there Xmas time frame to deliver if we don't find a way to get it up there via Bronco Brother shipping earlier...

I also grabbed one for a guy in Hawaii for the same price and will take with me when I go.

As of this past Sun there were still 2 out there if you want me to grab you one Patrick. I'd like to get the same amount and I'm sure we can arrange a way to get it up to you w/o having to pay shipping. Rick said last time he sent a front dress it ran around $50...

I need to do a little research. I have a power steering bracket off of a Ford van that allows me to run a saginaw PS pump with a serp belt. (not installed on the Bronco yet) I need to find out if this is compatible with the Explorer serp set up. Anybody know off hand?

The problem I see with your P/S bracket off the van and the Explorer setup is that the Exploder bracket is a one piece deal that mounts the P/S pump, reservoir & A/C pump! I'm sure you could run your saginaw setup as long as you didn't run that part of the Explorer but then you'd have to figure out what you're gonna do for an A/C pump if you wanted to keep your OBA... One of these years I'd like to explore the idea of mounting a York running the exploder serp!

I am assuming this was a U-pull it lot? Maybe I will need to hit up the Rancho Cordova yards tomorrow at lunch!

I am going to say no, it sits to far forward. But if it was to work I would like to know too.

Wonder if you could mill the back side down so it was shorter ?

The van bracket also holds the PS pump (saginaw style) and the AC compressor.

I just don't know if it fits with the rest of the explorer set up.

Yep! I grabbed 2 of the 4 setups they had out there this past Sat & ran outta steam. Went back Sun for a 3rd and they had pulled another '97 in there between Sat afternoon and Sun morn for a total of 5!

I'll suggest a 1/2" drive 5 point 1/2" socket with a long ratchet or breaker bar! The outermost timing cover bolts (1 on each side) are a MUTHAF*&%ER!!!!! I degraded to using a pair of vice grips and hammer on one for 30 min or more...(Don't worry Rick, I'll take that bolt!) Must have to do with them seizing those beautiful motors with sodium silicate. The GT-40 heads were TOTALLY cooked! Balancer is easy to get off though... Crank doesn't budge a bit!

No way no how... The Van bracket is what I run and it sets the accessory pulleys at the same spacing as the Mustang accessories. The Explorer stuff sets back much farther and all the parts are pretty uniquely Explorer.

Sounds like I need to find a Mustang serp set up then. Thanks for the clarification Tony.

Patrick, aren't you already running Serp? Other than the Explorer stuff, all of the 302/351 serp brackets and accessories are compatible. Mine's got a mustang alternator bracket and a van PS/AC bracket. You can mix-n-match most of the components.

The mustang setup would probably be a much easier swap for you anyway. You can keep your timing cover, balancer, and probably your current water pump. The way your radiator is pushed forward you already have plenty of room. All you should need is the passenger side Alternator bracket and a tensioner. Your compressor would have to move to the driver side or possibly under the alternator on the passenger side where the smog pump would sit. The big advantage of the explorer setup is it leaves more room behind the radiator for the fan, not really an issue with your radiator mounting.
Why are you thinking of changing from the Crown Vic. dual belt serpintine setup, keep in mind that with your setup you can loose a alternator or PS pump and still drive home?

Pat, I am thinking about trying to build a custom mount on my exploder dress for this pump.

Yes I am. I am running the dual belt set up from an 89 Crown Vic.

The van bracket holds the PS pump and the AC compressor, so my AC compressor will bolt on top of the PS pump on the same bracket. The main reason for switching to a new single belt set up is my current Crown Vic PS pump bracket is not designed to bolt a saginaw pump into it. I had to modify it to make the saginaw pump fit. This modification weakens the bracket and I've had one break on me in the past right at this weak point. So I would like to eliminate this weak point.
