  • Explorer serp setups?

Looks like the clunkers just hit down here! I spotted 2 '96 Explorers & a '97 Mountaineer w/ complete, unmolested 5.0s (aside from the dayglow paint meaning the blocks are boat anchors!). So the question being, what all do I need to pull off of these for a serp swap onto a '69 302? I apologize for my laziness (or lack of time babysitting twins right now) for the inability to run a thorough search. I know its been covered but just need the quick down and dirty.

I'm assuming all the front brackets, pulleys, accessories (any need for the smog pump?) and timing cover? Did I leave anything out? What alt does the explorer run (3G)? If not a 3G will the one I have bolt up?

They also have complete upper and lower intakes which I assume are desireable... Not sure on the Mountaineer heads but could be GT-40P being a '97... Others are GT-40 correct? Might be scrap depending on what they do w/ the motors...

Like I said, there's 3 that just rolled in and I'm heading down there first thing in the morn if anyone is interested in any of this stuff let me know and I will pull. Not real sure what they'll ding me for it just yet but I'm sure we could work out a fair deal for all if anyone is in need!

You will need all of the brackets, the timing chain cover, all the accessories, the tensioner, the water pump, etc. Basically strip it back to the block and heads, as everything from the block forward is unique to the Explorer 5.0. When in doubt, pull too much off. The alternator I believe is a 4g model and is not at all compatible with the 3g mounting. All of the accessories are built to be low profile, so you need everything for the swap.

Don't forget the harmonic balancer too - it is needed however it must be rebalanced as it has the wrong imbalance spec for your 69 motor.

The upper and lower intakes are also desirable, as are the heads.

    Good luck and have fun....

I read in a post on Classic that Driven auto parts sells a pulley to be able to use the stock 3 bolt 28oz balancer and the Explorer serp setup. Anyone running this?

          Hey Tony,
Any idea what the amp rating is on that 4G? I'll assume its got some good output since guys are running them...

As others have said, grab it all. The clutch fan can be a bear, with out the "special" tool. It is a large wrench that goes on the fan nut. The other part of the tool prevents the pulley from spinning. It is a regular thread, not reverse.

Another option is to remove the water pump and fan as a unit. It can be a pain with that fan in the way though.

I was able to hold the pully with some vice grips a with one of the bolts in the pulley removed, slip a large crescent wrench on the fan nut and spin it off. But I didn't need the pulley as I destroyed it in the process.

I have heard good things about the Napa tool. If you are going to Ecology in Chula Vista, there is a Napa on the 905 that has the tool, About $80 though...

Get the fuel rail too, if it has a return line.

How 'bout a big wrench and a strap wrench?

              2nd ?: What's a guy do for a fuel pump that runs a '69 carbed 302 w/ serp setup?

Fellas... There's 3 of'em down here! Anybody want one????

I'd say try the strap wrench.

As far as the fuel pump, get a electric lift pump and run a regulator w/ return.

If memory serves the Explorer alternator is somewhere in the 130 amp range, similar to the 3G.

I could use one of the timing covers and an idler pulley.

One thing to note about that PS pump - I have been told theres a smaller diameter pulley that can be put onto it to run the pump a little faster for more volume. Power steering is all about volume and not so much about pressure. Places like AGR can up the volume on that pump a bit. A friend of mine runs that pump and with the increased volume he's pretty happy with the improvement in steering performance when crawling through the rocks.

What a damn shame to see all those nice motors turned into scrap metal! Great program! Very economical and "green"...

Did some good work on a pair of '97 Mountaineers down here today!
That second setup just about wore my A$$ out though! Fought me for every bolt... I got'em all though.

Thanks for all the great help and info fellas!

BTW, still a pair of '96 Exploders out there... "Got Serp?"

There was one that was fairly well torn apart and I'll check if that stuff is still in there. I think it was! I'll let you know if I conjure some up next time I'm in there...
