    Re: East Bay area meetup?

[QUOTE=14Justice;147691]Sorry I missed some of you guys. Just so everyone finds out from the source... Lessons learned today:

    1) Steering is much more effective when the flaming river joint locking pin doesn't vibrate loose and the steering shaft separates from the steering box at almost 70mph on hwy 680 in a curve.

Seems to be a common issue. Another 4x4 buddy had his come apart while on the freeway, and I heard of another guy that lost his while wheelin.

Thanks for the reminder. I also lost a Borgeson Universal lock pin while at high speed in the desert. (same as Flaming River...) Very helpless feeling...

I swore then that I would never put another small u-joint in my steering shaft. Go with the big Spicer joint, pinch bolts, and safety wire.

I'm glad that you are OK...

Thanks James, I was extremely lucky to have saved it. One moment it was headed for center divide from the number three lane, hit the bump at the shoulder and sent me back across all four lanes. I'm definitely looking into something different. Sounds like this wasn't the first issue with those joints.

I would have sh!t a brick in Brad's shoes on his trip over the Sunol grade today! Glad you guys are okay. I believe Spaceburger wins the prize for longest distance traveled for Pizza. The elusive Ryan made an appearance (he was pulling in at the same time as me). Several from the yahoo group made it over too.

A week or so ago I ran into the father of a girl I grew up with - hadn't seen him in probably 20 years. He was all over my Bronco (he's a Jeep guy). Turns out his son in law owns a Bronco (which did not make it, though the owner (Andy) did).
With him was the owner of a very nice Bronco (Ron of Ron's brake) that has been cruising around Livermore for a long long time (one that I've drooled over many times). Ron's son also owns a Bronco (he did not make it).

Another EB owner who's lived in Livermore for two weeks happened to be passing by and pulled in - he ended up hanging with us for a while too and will be joining NCB. I do not recall his name but he was a nice guy.

Paul (DirtDonk) invited a few along - one guy out of Dublin who's rig is down with a fuel pump failure, another nice guy to talk to.

So all in all, a few new possible members may be emailing for access soon.

And because Spaceburger's having problems - his pictures are attached below.

No kidding! And Lindsay still had a smile on her face and a calm demeanor when they arrived. Probably trusts Brad's judgement, abilities and calmness under fire from the sound of it, and was having a good time once they got there.

So I guess I'm the only one to not have heard of all the issues? Now I'm hearing all of your stories and wondering what was going on.

OH and thanks to Jay (go team green!) and his handy-dandy tool kit and willingness to jump right in and help tighten it back down for their trip back!

Not the first time he and his tools or electrical supplies have made life easier for some of us.

                    Thanks again Jay.
                    For the ride too!

                      Re: East Bay area meetup?

I have that same flaming River steering shaft on both broncos. I've had it loosen once and I used lock tight on the setscrews...scary it happened to Brad. I checked mine while we were all hanging out. Great to see you guys. That new guy...I think his name was Nick.

                        Hi Paul,

Yes, that is the type I run regardless of application. There are 3/4x36 splines, and there are 13/16x36 as well. That Spicer joint uses a pinch bolt, and a prevailing torque nut so that even if the nut loosens...it will not fall off. Not true with the Borgeson joint.

(and yes, Flaming river is just a cheaper copy of the Borgeson universal...)

On the shaft side...I disassemble the joint, and either broach it for a key...or plug weld the END of the shaft, drill thru the yoke, insert a 1/4 inch steel pin, and weld both ends shut.

                        Anything less is dangerous.
