  • Rich's 1968 bronco build thread

Iv'e been on the board for a couple of years but I owned a 1991 full size bronco until recently

I had it for 10 years so it wasn't easy selling it but I was only able to do it because I was going to be able to buy something Iv'e wanted for almost as long as I'd owned it.

About 4 hours after I sold the '91, I pulled into my driveway with a 1968 basket case. It has the original 289, 3 speed manual now on the floor, dana 20 T-case, dana 30 front axle and 9" rear.

The very first thing I did was rip the doors, top, roll cage and 2 miles of wire that ran nowhere.

Then the collection of plans and parts began. I didn't think the day would really ever come and I didn't put the other bronco up for sale (someone asked to buy it off me) so this was kind of sudden.

The wiring is a mess so I got these....

    EZwiring.com

    (power windows kit)

Also from wild horses I got the headlight relay kit

Since I'll be customizing the dash I also picked up the tuffy glove box from WH

Iv'e been laying out the new dash and I'm going to do an easily removable panel with some changes to the stock layout to make it work with everything I'm adding.

The radiator is a little shot so I bought this one used off a NCB member

I also started collecting parts for my lift plans. I got the deluxe 2" body lift kit from WH

as well as some used front 3.5" lift coils from another NCB member

I'm thinking of going with ruffstuffspecialties.com rear shackle flip kit for the rears lift.

I also couldn't resist buying a used winch off of a NCB member

I plan on building my own bumpers and sliders so It's nice to have this now so I can do it once and be done with it.

I planned to start with the wiring but The weather has been nice enough to where I can still drive it so I didn't want to take it apart until the weather wasn't so good making it easier not to want to drive it. After driving it a little bit, I noticed some sweet death wobble so I picked up the track bar from WH since the price between new bushings and sale price was minimal. Also, with the lifting that'll be going on, I'll be needing the adjustment it gives.

I also realized that the bronco was butt ugly. The body is pretty good but not great plus I plan to wheel it a ton so I didn't want to spend a bunch of time and money on a more legit paint job so I did it the redneck way....

      A little previous owner bondo

One hole I left like it is mainly because I plan to remove the whole windshield assembly and really do it right.

      Here's some of my bondo...

      Primer

And then to pay tribute to my 1991 bronco which was a member of the family essentially...the paint scheme

And the final outcome in daylight after 17 cans and 2 days of spray paint.....

        Painted headlight buckets

        Flares back on

Tail lights are back in as well as a freshly reconditioned liscence plate bracket

Also, this is a handy little kit called the Re-seal paint kit

So now that it looks better, I plan to get the dash panel finished with components installed and wired with plug ends on all the wiring. That way it's done and ready to mount when I start the wiring harness. The weather is still nice so I still don't want to tear into the bronco making it not driveable. More updates to come.
