  • NP241 DHD or NP241 DLD

Hey Everyone, just bought two nv4500 setups today. One has an NP241 DHD and one a NP241 DLD. Justin (trailbound) turned me on to the idea of replacing my dana 20 with one of the NP241's. The setup would be on the driver's side of the rig but seems very long. I am in uncharted waters here with these transfer cases but if they could work I would be able to save myself a ton on money on adapters. Can someone walk me through step by step on what all this swap would entail? (the nv's are both 23in spline gas trannys).

I am personally not a fan of chain drive transfercases because you can't twin stick them.
WIth an NV4500, I'd either put a 205 behind it or save up for an Atlas.

Yea. The np241 would make for too long of a setup I think. I have a dana 20 already. I don't think I want to stall my project that long for to save for the atlas. Any experience with the hydrolic clutch system on these transmissions to a bronco?
      thanks

Google SYE NP241 and for roughly $200 bucks you can eliminate the slip yoke and about 6-9 inches off the back of that tcase. Now it's short enough to run.

How wide are those t-cases? Will it even fit between the frame rails of an EB?

Here you go! This is what you need to run your Dana20. Its an open box item so its a little cheaper too.

                I would use the 20, 205 or the 241

If I remember correctly you're going to be using this as a family trail rig. Spend the weekend in the mountains and have fun. An Atlas would be like using two condoms...It just does not make sense, unless you want to spend a couple grand.

                205: 2:1 ratio

20: 2.43:1 ratio (my first choice)

                241: 2.72:1 ratio

205 is the strongest and the 241 is the weakest. But if you're not planning on abusing it, I dont see why not to use it.

Assuming you use the AA trans to bell housing adapter, you only need a new clutch disc and pilot bushing. Then you re-use your stock flywheel, pressure plate, throwout bearing, clutch release arm, etc.

Thanks for all the information everyone! I think I will stick with the dana 20 for now. I am planning on building a nice trail rig, so I think you are right in your thinking that I won't need to go too crazy on the transfer case. Thanks NorcalKD. That is much less expensive then anywhere else I have seen! Thanks also Lars for the clutch tips. Yea, I talked to the guys at WH today and they told me nightmare doesn't use a hydo clutch. Just posted the transfer cases on craigs! Hope I gets some bites so that I can pour that money into the adapters.

Patrick will you walk me through how you got by without the bell housing adapter for your NV?

                    thanks again everyone.

Patrick used a chevy nv so all he had to was drill some new holes. No such luck with your dodge NV

Yeah my Chevy NV4500 only had to be redrilled. Let's take a look at your Dodge and see if there is a way to do it. Do you have stock Ford bellhousing that we can use for mock up?

The Dodge NV has a longer input shaft than the Ford-specific transmissions. The adapter also serves as a spacer.

There are also two bell housing index diameters for the Chevy NV4500, depending on year. If you have a late Dodge NV, you should be able to swap in a 5.61 input shaft from a 96+ GM, and run the existing Dodge input retainer. (You'll want to shorten it about an inch, and check to make sure that the input shaft seal is correct.)

That would allow you to run the late NV4500 directly up to your Ford Bell, which of course you would have to bore to fit the larger index hub. Then all you need is a GM pilot bushing, and of course a 1-1/8x10 clutch disc.

I'm pretty sure that the Ford bolt pattern is not compatible with the late NV bolt pattern, because there are no ears where the bell casting goes. When I did mine, I used a Lakewood Bell housing, so I didn't care. On my newest Bronco, I used the AA adapter kit from Wild-H, and have no regrets.

Thanks. I with that information I think I'll go with the AA. Does anyone have an opinion on whether to rebuild the trans before I put it in. I know about the fifth gear issue on the nv4500, but would you rebuild it or just go for it farm fresh?
