  • Power steering remote reservoir...

I have a PSC power steering P pump with a remote can on it and at the moment I'm using a GM Astro van remote reservoir. The problem is that the return fluid really stirs up the fluid in the reservoir causing a lot of aeration which makes a loud whining noise. For awhile I have been eyeballing the PSC reservoirs that have an internal filter. Does anybody have one and do they stop the fluid from aerating like it does with a stock remote reservoir?

I had the same problem. I ended up buying the PSC reservoir at the recommendation. Of PSC. It did exactly what they said it would. No more aeration, no cavitation, no whine.

I'm running the new hi-flow PSC pump w/reservoir with the filter built into it. No hard wheeling on it yet other than playing on some big 6' rock at my place BUT it started whining then. I do not have a cooler on it yet (maybe that's the whine). I thought I'd be OK if I wasn't wheeling hard yet...guess not.

Fluid gets hot just pumping thru the system...lot of volume!

your return fluid needs to enter low port.. so no air mix is involved..

I'm a huge fan of PSC, but I think HOWE makes a better reservoir.
It uses a normal toyota spin off filter, the suction port is larger and the top baffle covers more area.

Junkyard option is a 80's-ish chevy van that has a full canned ham with a remote return on top instead of a cap and a return hose nipple into the can. Holds about a gallon of fluid. I can take a pic if your interested.

That might work too but I've already tried to install my PSC pump I to a stock GM can... The stock ones are REALLY tight!!!

I found a better option... Remote can on the pump and a 2 quart remote mount power steering reservoir from a big rig. They have an internal filter like a high dollar PSC or Howe reservoir but you can pick one up at G&O Truck Dismantlers in Jackson for about $60. The replacement filter is $10-15 at a truck parts place. My system holds like 3 quarts of fluid, stays cool and makes very little noise plus no cavitation.

Sounds like a reasonable option. What pump did you use? PSC? Did you need to fab a bracket or does it mount to the stock 5.0 serpentine ps bracket?
Thanks for the good info. I wanted to check out that setup on your bronco at Bronctoberfest but there was too much fun going on.

OK I edited. It looks like you have the same pump as Crawlin68 and Daddy4Zack. Do you have an application for the reservoir you picked up? Is that a picknpull type place?

                    THANKS

I have the PSC "P" pump mounted to a van bracket with serpentine belt. The reservoir is off of a Freightliner Century class, but just about any class 8 big truck 2000 and newer will have a similar reservoir. It originally had 1/2" return and 3/4" feed lines. I cut those off and welded on a 3/8" return nipple and 5/8" feed nipple from an astrovan reservoir. G & O is more of a full service Dismantler like the rancho ones. Tell them what you need and they'll get it for you. They let me pick through a pile of reservoirs to find mine.

Cool. I see you had to notch the Lars bracket. I was reluctant to cut the bracket for the reservoir can. When I spoke to James at wild horses he said it was designed for a particular reservoir rotation.
