  • Volt Regulator Help!

Hey guys I am wiring up my regulator on the buggy and have no clue where to start. This is the replacement one sold by Napa for a 71 EB. But it is not like my stock 71's and has no instructions with it. The wires are Blk, Org, Grn, no labels or anything to speak of. Can someone give me some advise as to how to hook this thing up. It has been a few years since I have had an exturnal regulator (back in the VW days) and I am lost. Where do I hook it to, alt or batery or ??? I like this one better than the stock EB's since it is fully sealed. That should be a plus for the buggy's engine bay!

    Thanks for any help!

The wiring diagram I have shows a 4 wire setup, but one is ground, so that one is probably grounded throught the body.

Stock colors were yellow to + side of starter relay, green and red to ignition, and orange to alternator.(from left to right plug facing twords you)

I can't find my notes right now but I think they might be different since I have a 4 wire setup. Have you checked out the tech articles on the Bronco Graveyard site? They have schematics there. This is off their site but it is for a 74. Are you sure you got the right part?

I was just looking at Napa's website. They list 3 regulators for a 71 bronco. One like you have, One like I have(4 wire) and one for an alternator w/o Transistorized Ignition. They differ in amps to. The one you got is a higher amp rating, up to 105 amps.

Yes I new it was for a high amp alt (mine is 140) but I just am not sure on the order of hook up. Chuck did you check yours? Is it like mine? Also is it ok to put the power out put lug from th ealt. right to the starter? My batery is behind the seat and I would like to avoid running a second cable back to it. Since the starter is wired right to the batery with a large cable it should be ok.

Thanks for the Wiring link but I am not good at reading that stuff. Give me a set of prints for a 17 story high rise and I can do it in my sleep but that

Just looked at mine and the diagram again. It has only three wires, and it's grounded throught the body of the regulator. From looking at mine, the wiring diagram and remembering the other regulators I've seen.....

With the plug facing you far right wire on your regulator will go to the alternator(black), middle wire will go to ignition switch key on(orange) and left wire goes to +side starter relay(black).

If not you got some funky regulator

O.K. Kevin here ya go. My voltage regulator has 4 positions but only runs 3 wire In my case orange the Field wire runs from alt (see pic) to the far right plug marked "F" also. The green wire on mine is the "hot" wire from the ignition and the yellow wire goes from the "A" tab to the battery side of the starter siliniod and to a isolator that is connected to it (not sure what it does ?) . The last thing on mine is an "I" which has never been used.

Does yours have some small letters on it to show Field, ign, ground. Because those are the three you need to connect and then place you HD battery cable in the appropriate place . If I had to guess black - ground, orange - field and green - ign. Hope the pics help. FM

                      It's a noise supressor.
