  • EFI shopping list for the pick-n-pull...

OK, so re-thinking this whole EFI thing for my stock 302 when I rebuild it (prob 20 yrs from now!).

With the abundance of "clunkers" in the yards right now I figure its a good time to start collecting some parts once I get my rig on the road in the next couple weeks!...

As far as the '96-'01 Exploders, I've got upper/ lower intakes, throttle body, fuel rail w/ driver's side return, regulator, 19#/hr injectors, MAF housing & sensor. Anything else I want off this rig as far as EFI goes?

I plan on snagging everything else from an '89-'93 Mustang: Computer (does it matter if it's a manual or auto tranny if I plan on running a VSS?), distributor, coil, throttle cable.

What sensors will I want to pull off either of these donors? VSS, TPS (FFI says Mustang here), ECT, ACT? FFI also says the VSS will work on the D-20 with stock speedo gear and a speedo cable from an Early '80s FSB w/ cruise control?

Any other "junkyard" parts that are recommended or usable?

I've already got the Carter 4070 fuel pump that I can recycle into the EFI system and will just need a hi-press pump to add on.

When the old motor gets a re-work with upgrades I plan to put '69 351W heads on as well as the EFI. I'll re-wire the whole rig w/ an aftermarket harness (not sure but prob Centech or Painless) and go w/ the RJM EFI harness. Does either of the chassis harnesses work better than the other w/ the RJM harness or they all basically the same as far as compatibility?

Thanks for any help from all you EFI gurus!

Alright another sucker starting this mess I'm in the middle of this project as well

As far as the '96-'01 Exploders, I've got upper/ lower intakes, throttle body, fuel rail w/ driver's side return, regulator, 19#/hr injectors, MAF housing & sensor. Anything else I want off this rig as far as EFI goes?
The serp setup of the front, but we all know you have that hahaha

I plan on snagging everything else from an '89-'93 Mustang: Computer (does it matter if it's a manual or auto tranny if I plan on running a VSS?), distributor, coil, throttle cable.
If you are running an auto tranny you'll probably want the neutral safety switch. I know some folks go without out it, but its probably a good idea.

I've already got the Carter 4070 fuel pump that I can recycle into the EFI system and will just need a hi-press pump to add on.
        Add a return line

When the old motor gets a re-work with upgrades I plan to put '69 351W heads on as well as the EFI. I have a Centech with an RJM and it hasn't been much trouble.
Remember that the 4G or 3G alts deliver much more power than the original and the AMP gauge will need to be disconnected or replace with a Voltmeter.

The biggest thing for me have been the radiator, since I'm running the Explorer Serp setup I have the reverse water pump, so the outputs on the radiator need to accommodate this. Also I have a f-100 steering box so that makes things tight. I'm thinking of changing boxes and clearing up the space.

Good Luck with the project, sounds like you have some work cut out for you. Just take it in stages and you'll be all good!!

Re: EFI shopping list for the pick-n-pull...

As far as sensors go, a lot of guys say buy all new ones. I bought a donor 1986 Cougar that donated most of it's sensors. The only thing I bought new was two oxygen sensors. I haven't had many issues with the rest of the stuff but I did have an erratic idle until I cleaned out the idle air bypass valve that came off the cougar. As far as a distributor, if you can afford it, I would say go with an MSD pro billet or similar aftermarket distributor. I have acquired 3 stock distributors before finding one that wasn't too worn out. Plus, I am still running a flat tappet cam so I had to change the distributor gear from the steel one to a cast iron one. I do have the RJM harness, and it is great! Well worth the money, to not have to build a harness. As far as the ECM, try to get an A9L from a early 90's Mustang GT. With the RJM harness, you just choose the manual transmission connector, and even if you have a C4 or C6, the engine will think there is a manual behind it. Good luck! If you have any questions once you get into it, just ask!
SOLD: 1975 Ford Bronco: 105" wheelbase, King 14" c/o shocks, King 2" air bumps w/ Duff arms, 4 link rear w/ coils. Fuel injected 408W, ZF 5 speed/Atlas II(4.3) and Dana 60/70 axles with 5.13 gears and ARB's, 41.5/13.5R17 Pitbull Rockers on 17" Raceline Monsters.

Thanks and great info! I'll just hold off on the distributor and get a new one when the time comes. I'll be running a flat tappet cam as well so prob better just getting the right shiznit new, in that regard, is best. I'd like to hold out for an A9L but we'll see. Will a computer out of an auto mustang work in my rig running a NP-435? Just get the right connector to fool the brain? I'm assuming as well that all the EGR equipment can be deleted as I have NO smog requirement of any kind...

This project will be years in the making as I want to get it back on the road and enjoy! Going to collect parts as I go and will make another run to the yards prior to my departure for Hawaii to collect a few things for the "project pile"...

The RJM harness comes with the proper diodes wired in to Eliminate the EGR. you just need to get a block off plate or remove the EGR housing. As far as an auto ECM, I think there are idle issues with it when there is no electronic transmission signal. But I'm not sure.

Going through FFI today it said you could have idle issues when running w/o VSS but nothing about running an auto EEC w/ manual tranny. Will the VSS overcome the disparity for the computer?

RJM has some really good write-ups on their site:

                      Beginning an EFI Swap:

and the 5-part Bronco Driver EFI Swap Article Series:
                      http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=62

I used the RJM harness and am very pleased.

O2 sensors harness - "HEGO" Factory harness is specific for auto/man transmission. If you use any of the factory stuff you can find the needed info to make pin changes/identify which is which by going to different Mustang sites. The subject has been reviewed over and over on Classic, so you could do a search there as well. I had a cold idle issue on mine until I connected the right wire to the right place...

Picked up a VSS for mine, running an auto A9 with a 435, workes great! The RJM coin spent was worth it (after 40+ hours soldering on a pegged out plywood board on a stock harness), plug and play

Thanks for the clarification Rick. Kindof what I gathered from FFI too. Seems the puter should be fine as long your running a VSS.
