  • DIY lift off hinges

I've been thinking about those cool $200 lift off door hinges, and read the "how to" version where you cut off one of the small ears of your existing hinges. I just found these hinge pins on ebay and was thinking you could replace the stock under/middle/over design with a set of these. If it worked they'd be cheap enough to buy another set for lift off tube doors. Might be hard to weld w/o warping, or hard to make all 4 the same, but still makes me wonder.....

    Anyhow, thought I'd share.

not big enough...........or sturdy enough I think they'd be jumping off the pins.

On normal cars, I have seen people just remove the Stock hinge pin, and get a replacement from the "Help" section at the parts store.
Installing those new pins from the bottom, and placing a C-clip on the top of them (they are longer then normal) allows you remove the snap ring and lift off.
Dunno if those fit EB's though.
If not, just using a tight fitting peice of round tube and welding one end to the hinge would work.

I have a set of 5/16" pins with the a thin metal piece that goes from one end to the other and it is shaped kind of like a D. I just had to drill out the existing holes slightly. Makes removing the doors a two minute job. The one problem is that the body line on the top hinge gets in the way of the head on the pin. I just massaged the body a little and it slides right in. You could always come up from the bottom though.

Well, I figured my discription sucked so I broke out the camera. Just remember my bronco is hammered, an these pins have been through a lot of it.

Holy crap. Taken out of conotation makes that sound really bad. Thanks for the laugh.

I was thinkin' the raw hinges looked like these lift off hinges. Not nearly as simple as Marc's.......

Build up a simple Jig and fab those ebay hinges on. I bet they are the same used, they look close enough for me.
