First timer at building an engine... so I am looking for a little advise. Looking through the forums and my bank book, I came up with a top end parts list. I am keeping the lower end stock, at least until it is inspected by someone more knowledgeable than me. According to the PO the engine was in a bronco and ran great. He is changing to 4bt cummins.
I want to upgrade the heads so that is where I started, the list ballooned from there.
    Any advise is welcome.

You will LOVE the 35-308-8 cam. I had mine built into the identical engine but had a pro in Concord build it. I went with the GT40P heads and did a 9.5 compression ratio. Plenty of power on regular gas.

If your spending over 1k for heads get afr165. Everywhere I read says they are the best head for the price range, flowing much better and putting down more power.

I totally concur! I don't think the GT40X heads are really going to fit your application. 165s will flow all that you need and the smaller runners will boost your low end torq.

Thanks for the input. I am lookiing at the afr 1399 heads. Any reason to use a smog head instead?

Might throw a stud girdle in there while you are at it. Assume this is carbureted, if not...bigger injectors, MAF and maybe a tune.

AFR 1399 heads are great. I have the Trick Flow 170's and like them a lot.

Make sure the oil pump is good...its just money, but the flowkooler waterpumps are very nice too...

              Sounds like a great project.
