NP435 shifting

Help with shifting this beast!
I am putting a Ford Motorsports new motor in my 72. It has 340 horsepower and I want to be able to shift my np435 a little faster than stock. Right now I have to lift the stick when going from second to third and about half the time I end up too far on the lift and grind a little. It's a pain in the butt but I like the trans other than the shift. Are there any tricks that I can do to fix this. The trans is out now so it would be a good time if I can trick the shift. I know of the setup wild horses sells that cuts the shifter off and uses a rod and new shifter further back but it look like crap installed. Does anyone run this and if so do you like it. Does synthetic fluid help if so what brand... Does anyone have a automatic setup for sale cheap maybe a trade and some cash? Any input would help greatly....

I run the np435 and I like it only draw back to me is 2nd-3rd
Seems to be a hell of a jump. I run 80/90 gear oil seems to shift smooth when warmed up.
I also installed the gear banger from wild horses and. I am very pleased with it.
Helps shifting a lot more car like shifting then rowing a boat that's just my 2 cents

I think you have your answer... the gear banger definitely helps but there is only so much you can do to improve the NP435 shifting characteristics. I agree it does look a little goofy and everybody asks me what the hell it is.

This being said, with the tranny out, rebuild it. New, tight synchros should help a bit. Also rebuild the top cover where the shifting mechanism is located. I've driven a couple that were freshened up with new guides/pads/etc and they feel better than mine does.

I will upgrade to an NV4500 or ZF at some point... I like the NP435 granny gear but hate that my top gear ratio is 1:1, and I dislike the clunky shifting.

You could also add some power punch or the really thick Lucas oil additive. Older style transmissions that use gear oil instead of ATF seem to do well with thicker oil. You might even want to try 75w140 synthetic and about a pint of Lucas stabilizer.

Thanks guys looks like a gear banger setup and at least new shifting pads ony the forks cause I have a recent rebuild

The rebuild kits for the shift cover run about $15. Atleast they did when I rebuilt mine about 4 years ago. Easy rebuild. Comes with all the small parts to rebuild that shift tower and tightens things up nicely.
