  • NP435 lost reverse,, kinda

About a year ago just backing out of driveway the tranny pops out of reverse. Like its not fully seating with full contact. The shifter goes into gear but not "locked" in if that makes sense. Even if I hold the shifter under pressure. Now it doesn't pop out and grind all the time, that's how I can still drive it. On the Rubicon trip it acted up a little.. So on "load" it pops out, little or no load it works.. (But not seating all the way) awhile ago it was hard to shift into 3rd. And down shifting into 2nd was a bitch.. Since then I have done a fluid change with 50W royal purple oil. Now it shifts like butter...... Except for reverse...

    Any adjustments or ideas?

Rebuild it... Sounds to me like something with the detents are worn out. I've never had an NP435 apart but with the ZF there are small springs and detent balls that click when you shift into a gear. If your NP is similar that could be the case. From what I've heard those 4 speed trannies aren't hard to rebuild and you don't need any special tools.

Sounds like it's going to need to come out. You can pull the shifter out and inspect the condition of the pivot point part, but there is no external adjustment. Good news is it is cheap and easy to build/rebuild. There are some syncro updates that are worthwhile, but it may already have the update parts so check before buying anything. Only hard thing is removing the bearing race from input shaft housing, I welded a bolt across it so it can be knocked out with a punch.

Depends on how big of an access hole you have in the floor. You have to pull the top cover off of the trany.

I had to pull the top off mine on a snow run to Uncle Toms a few years ago. I am sure glad I have a large access hole in the floor still. Mine got stuck in neutral due to the shift forks popping out of alignment.

I too would guess a worn shift fork pad, or a bent fork.

Ok so i had a crazy idea.. If I had bent the fork trying to get into second gear....(PULLING Hard Back) (two hands) Can I put it in granny low or 3rd and force bend it back?(PUSHING Hard Forward) it may make the forks go from / to | .. does that make sense? or will i fuck things up worse.. again i dont know if thats the problem but it may be.. Ill try whatever before i have to pull it.. but if i break it it has to come out anyway..

I kinda doubt that will work... I think the best thing to do is pull it out and remove the top cover so you can find out what's going on. It would suck to cause more damage and therefore cost yourself more money while trying to save a little. Besides it sounds like you have a few symptoms that are pointing towards a complete rebuild.

if it ground while shifting into reverse you might have sheared some teeth off the reverse gear, as a worse case. that's what I found in my tranny when I bought it.
