  • Steering Dana 44 Help..

Just put my driveline in for my D44 upgrade. (had it shortened) I have a D44 with a Detriot(i think) from the PO. My question is In 2WD drives and steers just fine. In 4WD it will not turn with out a fight!!(on the STREET) Power steering pump squeeks and spits out fluid. Steering just wants to retun to strait.. I realize that this is on the street but shouldnt it have some give?? When i get into the MUD There is no resistance. Then i ulocked the hubs. Kept it in 4 LOW and same thing DIDNT want to turn? Is there something else going on???

Ohh its a bitch to get out of 4 low. T shift (two hands)

The locker looks like a Factory limited slip BUT there is no window to get to the spider gears. the whole carrier is a solid metal casing I could not see if it was hallow or if it had gears in it.. Not even any cross locking pins.. If this is solid then this would act like a full spool for the front.. It dosent look like a standard spool by any means but acts like one,, what is this thing??
    Any ideas??

    Thanks
    Aaron

    I have no idea.

I can tell you mine is hard as hell to steer on the asphalt, aired-down , in 4wheel drive, even with the locker turned off.

This probably doesn't help, but it's a reply.

Try leaving one hub unlocked and see if that makes it easier to steer.

I had the same problem with my Detroit in the front. I went through 2 power steer pumps before I switched to an ARB. Problem solved. So I agree with the last post. Leave one hub unlocked, it should be easier to steer. If so, then it is your locker causing the problem. Which is normal for a solid locker in the front.
