Any pitfalls to this procedure I should be aware of? Guy on CB has got one fairly cheap off a '74 & I wouldn't mind grabbing it for my oldest son's project as we piece him a rig together over the next 6 years. Can back fees be an issue? He said it's "open" (signed by seller & not buyer) so I guess all he'd have to do is mail it to me...

Re: Buying a title & glovebox door?
It is illegal, but blah blah
But get the VIN and call DMV to find out the status on title.
They will tell you for free if it is current or has any liens against it.Mark Harris

Re: Buying a title & glovebox door?
IMHO, no different then buying replacement frame, axles, or motor. It is part of the rig, and is needed to get the old girl on the road. Speeding is illegal too, so at least go the speed limit when you go and pick up the title.“I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.” TJ

Re: Buying a title & glovebox door?
Well, just so happens, a friend out here is PRETTY connected w/ the folks that take care of all that stuff on the legal side & should be a seamless xfer in that case. I could xfer immediately and then put the thing in "storage" (Hawaiian term for non-op). It's a '74 so we'd dodge the smog Nazis back in Cali when we come home...
Thanks guys! It'll be a LONG build (as he's only 9) but should be a nice one to watch come together! With any luck, he'll be sick of it by the time he's 16 & I'll have 2 for myself!!! LOL.Last edited by Fungus232; 03-02-2010, 09:01 AM.sigpicRoad trips on an island get boring after the 1st lap...

If it is a Calif. registration, you may want to non-op it in Calif. that way you don't have to get it inspected when you ship it back from HI.
The guy is in IL so pretty sure it's an IL title. Never heard of an inspection that indepth for a registered rig. Maybe something coming from a foreign country but not HI.sigpicRoad trips on an island get boring after the 1st lap...

Given the start of bi-annual Diesel powered smogs, the rumor of a push to retro fit non CAT/DPF equipped diesel rigs, the Green anything push, and the shortage of cash in the state, I am worried that they will try and roll back the 75 and older rule of smog check exemptions...

I have done this twice and they (PD) did not look for vin numbers on the frame only the easiest locations: glove box door and dash area on my 2002 Superduty.

Re: Buying a title & glovebox door?
If you have AAA they will take care of your inspection here in CA and its an easy process. I actually got a membership just so I could register my 8 vehicles there and not at the DMV.
I showed up to get mine verified. I have an aluminum dash on so no glove box door but I did bring it along. The lady went out to the Bronco with me and she asked where it was and I pointed to it on the frame, she looked at me like "you want me to stick my head where?"...I proceeded to reach in and grab the glove box door I brought with me and said, here, will this work? She was very grateful to not have to get dirty.
Thats how I rub...I mean roll!

Re: Buying a title & glovebox door?
I had to get an Indiana car verified at the DMV in Dec last year. The DMV inspector needed/wanted to see the vin in two locations. He was aiming for the frame, but i didn't know where it was so I showed him the (in this case) the vin on the dash at the windshield and a trim plate on the firewall.
The broncos vin is obviously on the glovebox, but most also came with a drivers door jam sticker. You can get repro jamb stickers from Marti Auto Works and i bet if both those were available, it would be no problem.
I still can't find the vin stamped on my bronco frame, even when I have the engine pulled.
