  • Diesel Smog

So my registration for my 02 Superduty shows up yesterday and it seems I need to get the 7.3 smogged at a "Check station". It is not a surprise, as I have been reading about this... But it still sucks as the majority of my registration fee now is a weight fee of $257.00 Now I get to look forward to an additional $75.00+ bucks for a smog check and cert...

You know it just seems that California does not want us to drive cars at all, let alone have any money for a retirement with all the new fees that keep popping up.

It will be interesting to talk to the smog guy when I get it done, just what are they looking for? (besides more money) The only thing I have on my truck is a Banks exhaust, and it did not come with a CAT/DPF. I wonder just how much these smog guys will really know, I mean they could not even find my Vin # on my 77 EB.

Not looking forward to getting mine for my 03 7.3L. So far no one has been able to tell me what can stay and what has to go, modification wise.

It is not really a smog test like a car. It is a smoke test, where they use an electronic eye that views how dark the smoke out of your tailpipe is when compared to a tinted test lense. So if you have a programmer, it would probably be wise to remove it if it causes your truck to smoke. Also, make sure your air cleaner is clean before the test. The more air there is, the less black smoke you will have. More than likely this year they will not be dyno'ing diesels. If your truck doesn't smoke, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

And if your truck was originally equipped with a catalytic converter, you need to have it!

There is alot of info in the tow rig section of Pirate4x4, but really it is a visual smoke test done by eye of a smog tech, so it varys.

                          Re: Diesel Smog

I even heard that they were postponing it for a year or more because of retooling smog stations. I also heard that at first it would be all trucks 1998 and newer, and that maybe next year they would start doing older trucks as well. In reality, it's all a money thing. Diesels will always smoke if you put a big enough load on the engine. A diesel engine is not like a gas burner, there are too many variables to be able to fairly smog all vehicles based on air quality figures like CO2, NOX and other chemicals like they do with gas engines. Smoke testing is about all you can do on the engines prior to 2007 when they all started running EGR and DPF systems. With a DPF system, you are insuring all the particulate matter is fully burned.

just wait untill the idiots at carb require a "best available technology" retrofit like what is required of gov fleet vehicles currently! at 13k a pop and a 4 hour burn every other day some power plant is spewing the smog to make our trucks here cleaner. the cost to gov agency's is killing the budgets allready. i won't post my true feelings on this matter.

Well, when we move back to CA I don't think my '04 PSD will come with us. Lost the EGR cooler last week and just ordered the River City Delete Kit, Oil cooler kit, 4" SS Magnaflow exhaust and a coolant filter kit. Hopefully cures my "steam locomotive" problem and gains some performance. ZERO smog regs here on the Islands...
