Re: Need a great transmission shop

Got the transmission in yesterday. What a hot one to be working on junk.

Tranny shifts awesome and works great. I chose a TCI Converter in replacement of my Art Carr because the Art Carr was too high of a stall which created too much heat. Art Carr said the stall on it is about 2600. So In its place, I got the TCI Sizzler which has about a stall of 16-1700. Well, apparently even that is too high because the tranny is running a solid 250 degrees with it being 105 outside. I have a large tube and fin cooler in front of the radiator which is rated at 30k GVW. It is a tube in fin which is way less efficient than a plate. I could probably solve all of this and just put in a stock converter but the drivability just isn't the same.

I called the guy who built it and he said 250 is the upper end of safe and we need to drop it to closer to 200-200 nominal operating temp max. It will have spikes to 250-275 but that should be rare. I read an article in Mustangs anf Fords where www.mikestransmission.com said they like 250-300 for normal. I called Mike and he said a C4 can run 250 all day with the right fluid. He said the Type F fluid sucks and should be replaced with a Dextron Synthetic like Amsoil or his synthetic blend which would lower temps quite a bit. I thought these old Ford trannies needed Type F but he said that is a myth.

Before I pull this damn thing out for the 5th f'ing time, I am going to get the largest damn Derale plate cooler-fan combo from Summit and put it in line with the other. I am thinking this might work because last night I took a 1 hour drive and the tranny hit 210 and stayed there. It was about 90 out side. So it seems I just need a little more cooling capacity.

What's more fun then ordering new parts from Summit? Woo Hoo!

Damn Carl, what a process this has been! Sounds like things are headed in the right direction finally. Hopefully you'll get the rig out for some wheeling before winter hits! Let me know if you want a chase truck around Frank Raines or Carnegie for a shakedown run...

Frank Rains is closed for the season. I think June first. I thought about hitting Carnegie this evening after is cools a bit, or tomorrow. What are their hours?

          Thanks for the offer too.

Re: Need a great transmission shop

I'm busy this weekend. Got plans this evening and might take a drive over to Santa Cruz or somewhere in the rig tomorrow. I'm open to an evening after work this week or maybe next weekend. I may be carrying a hot pager for work next weekend though which puts me on a very short leash.

That's what I put on the buggy, that largest cooler + fan summit sold. It was 200 ish and the fan turned on about 175 or something. Where is yours mounted?

The tube and fin one is up in front of the radiator behind the grill. It is about 2 inches from the radiator. I am thinking the lack of efficiency of the tube and fin style plus it being that far from the radiator which uses no shroud, I am not even close to getting the heat dissipation required with an above stall converter. I plan to mount the plate style fan and cooler under the rig on the drivers side away from the exhaust and still keep the cooler by the radiator.

What temp does your tranny run?

Re: Need a great transmission shop

Drove the piss out of it last night with the new Derale cooler installed. 150 degrees down hill and 175-180 pulling hard up hill. It was cooler outside, but before I couldn't get it below 220-230/ SO the cooler killed the heat. The heat the fan pulls out is super hot to the touch. So, officially I am finally ready to WHEEL!
