  • My air compressor bit the the dust

Well my Home Depot DeVilbiss air compressor finally bit the dust the other day. I wanted to get all of your recommendations on what I should replace it with. I would like to go to a oiled unit. The oil-less units are just too damn loud. What brands do you guys use? Any body selling one? TIA.

Seems like you chimed in on my recent compressor failure so I'll chime in on yours... When my cheap HF compressor gave up the ghost, my Dad (who bought it for me) replaced it with his "spare" Speedaire 4hp, 40gal compressor. It performs quite well and keeps up with most of my air tools (except maybe the pneumatic block sander), and its no where near as loud as my old direct-drive piece of junk.

Of course if you've got the room, bigger is better, and somebody's got a birthday TODAY...

LOL. Yeah I was wishing that mine would die so could get an oiled unit. I guess that I had better be careful what I wish for.

I've heard good things about the Speedaire. I was looking at a 20 gal. model, bu tI think it might be a little too small. The 30 or 40 gal. would probably be just right. That would be perfect if I could find a used one of those.

I just recently replaced my home shop speedaire with the 80 gallon Lowes compressor. I am pleased with it so far. If you buying new the main stat to look at is CFM. If you want to run most air tools you will want at least 8 cfm at 90psi to just get buy, 10cfm @ 90psi or more is ideal.

It was my grandfathers and is at least 20 years old so the motor finally gave up, the pump is good however so I will rebuild the motor someday to keep it going. It didn't push enough volume for what I needed so a upgrade was needed anyway.

Depending on what broke on your current compressor, sometimes they are rebuildable. A friend's crapsman was steadily losing its ability to pump and he was able to buy a rebuild kit which included many internal parts like rings for the piston, etc. Works just as good as new now - but loud as ever.

I found mine used on craig's list for $300. It's been great so far. "Industrial Air" brand, 60 gallon vertical tank, 110v/220v, 2 cylinder, oiled. The guy selling it said "it was just taking up room" and that he never used it. It was probably $800 to $1000 new.

Heard these are the "King Daddy" of compressors and have a great reputation. Alot of discussion in the Pirate Tools area about them.

Once Uncle Sam stops moving me around, I plan to get one.
