Re: Off Topic - New Pickup Trucks
The saga continues.
I learned that the deals in Idaho were a little too good to be true. Their sale price is accurate, their "as low as" price includes stacking a bunch of nickle and dime discounts that I don't qualify for. I was able to beat their price locally and actually had them find me a truck which was supposed to show up today. Today happens to be when news broke of Fiat/Chrysler under investigation for diesel emissions cheating... how's that for a headline to see upon waking up the day you are about to spend over 50k.
Right now the scandal is unproven and limited to the ecodiesel, but I have been through this once already and don't feel like rolling the dice on another vehicle that might get bought back or "fixed" in some manner that I don't like (volkswagen all over again). There's already speculation this will spread to the 2500+ cummins trucks as well.
I went to the Ford dealer again and drove a beautiful 2017 super duty today. Man I am in love with that truck. Window sticker was about identical to the Ram that I almost bought. Ford was not able to come down on price anywhere near as much (Ram was coming down over $12k, Ford is only budging about $4k). So... 61k+ tax, license, etc... all adds up to being a bit beyond my comfort level.
I drove another F150 ecoboost. Gotta say I like that truck a lot too. There's a 2016 that they are discounting a lot... it is close to what I want (but it is the very short bed). On paper though its payload capacity is about equal to the 2500 Ram that I was going to buy today.
I am almost ready to pull the trigger and step down to the F150. It is still enough truck for me but it is not overkill like the 250/2500 is. Will I still be happy with it in a few years? who knows... probably. It will be cheaper to operate for sure. This has been a real roller coaster day. I know I may be over-reacting by walking away from the Ram but it really gives me the heebie jeebies coming off of 1.5 years of waiting for VW dieselgate to conclude. I am not ready to go through that all again!
We shall see... have a few more questions for the dealer about the F150 but I am starting to lean pretty hard in that direction.
